About this Journey

Tucked between Cang Mountain and Erhai Lake, Dali is a Ming-era town that has retained much through the ages. It was once the chief city of Yunnan and the Nanzhao Kingdom’s capital, whose influence extended deep into China. At its peak during the Tang dynasty (618-907AD), the Nanzhao Kingdom stood up to the imperial Chinese armies. It ruled a territory extending from the high plains of present-day Myanmar in the west to Guizhou and Guangxi’s borders in the east. Not only will students be immersed in the ancient city, but they will also have the chance to create fengyi pottery, visit the local mosque, make flower hats and take a Kung-fu lesson. Students will walk away with an impressive cultural immersion experience and a new perspective of southern China.
