Hexi Village was once named Liulinying, situated on the west bank of Chaohe River north of Gubeikou Town, Miyun District, Beijing. In front of the village is one section of the Great Wall named Beiqi Great Wall that runs up and down the Green Dragon Mountain, and behind the town is one part of the Ming Great Wall. This village has a long history with rich culture.
For many students, China begins and ends in Beijing. They become used to seeing one side of China. While they may occasionally travel outside of the City to see the great wall or visit Shanghai, their knowledge and beliefs of China remain city-centric. This program aims to expose students to the real countryside of China and the vast power and culture that has launched countless stories, political campaigns, and artworks. Following this journey, students should have a better idea of what it looks like to live in the country and the historical importance of rural life in China’s vast history.
