The Niujie Mosque or ‘Ox Street Mosque’, is Beijing’s most majestic Mosque. Named fittingly after the road it is located on, Niujie Street (Ox Street), it is located in the southwestern corner of Beijing and is rich with culture and Muslim heritage. First built in 996, the Niujie Mosque has a history that stretches back over a thousand years. During this time, it has undergone numerous refits and extensions greeting Muslims from all over the world to worship. Unlike south-facing Buddhist temples, the Niujie Mosque faces towards Mecca, the holy land of Islam in the west. The layout is symmetrical and compact. During their visit to the Mosque, students will learn about Islam’s origin, history, and development in China. Their understanding of different religions will better prepare them as global citizens!
