What is the DofE Award?

With over 60 years of history, the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award was co-founded by HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, and German educationalist Kurt Hahn.

Prince Philip founded the DofE Award in 1956 after being inspired by his former headmaster at Gordonstoun school.

The duo recognized a gap in traditional education—important life skills and qualities essential for youth development were neither cultivated nor acknowledged in classroom settings. Their solution was the DofE Award: a global youth development program designed to inspire personal growth, foster self-motivation, and develop well-rounded individuals.

The relevance of this vision is even greater today. Parents and educators continuously ask: How can we prepare young people to step into a rapidly changing world with confidence?

The answer lies in equipping them with adaptability, resilience, and self-assurance—not just academic excellence but the holistic capacity to thrive.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award symbolizes these “soft skills” that prepare young people for life beyond the classroom.

A Mark of Excellence

The DofE Award is more than a certificate or medal; it is a global badge of excellence, resilience, and achievement.

With a presence in over 130 countries and millions of participants worldwide, the DofE Award holds significant prestige.

The Framework of the DofE Award

The DofE Award offers a flexible, non-competitive framework for holistic learning. It encourages young people aged 13 to 24 to challenge themselves across four key areas:

Voluntary Service, Skills, Physical Recreation, and Adventurous Journey.

For the Gold level, participants also complete a residential project, fostering independence and a sense of global citizenship.

The DofE Award is divided into three levels—Bronze, Silver, and Gold—each progressively more challenging.

What sets the DofE Award apart is its personalized nature: participants select activities based on their interests and aspirations, pushing boundaries while cultivating discipline, curiosity, and leadership.

The DofE Award Programs Delivered by WildChina Education

WildChina Education is not only a Five-Star Delivery Partner of the DofE Award but also a Recognized Activity Provider of the Adventurous Journey component.

Our expert instructors have guided students through expeditions in destinations ranging from Hainan Island and Inner Mongolia to Wuxi, Beijing, and even Japan.

What makes the DofE Award’s Adventurous Journey unique?

Unlike typical outdoor programs, the DofE Award emphasizes purposeful exploration and teamwork.

Each group designs a SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) goal before embarking on their journey. Throughout, participants face diverse challenges tailored to their DofE Award level.

For example, during trekking expeditions, students carry all their essentials for multiple days, meeting activity duration requirements (a minimum of six hours of purposeful activity daily, even for the Bronze level).

Along the way, team members take on specific roles such as navigation, cooking in the wild, leadership, and ensuring group safety.

These experiences build critical skills like leadership, teamwork, time management, and problem-solving.

Participants discover their passions while learning the values of commitment and perseverance—developing practical skills and leadership abilities essential in today’s fast-paced world.

How the DofE Award Impacts Students

Beyond the enriching experiences, the greatest value of participating in the DofE Award lies in the lifelong skills and qualities it fosters.

The recently published 2024 Impact Report highlights the profound changes the DofE Award brings to young people.

  • Improved Wellbeing: Participants report enhanced overall wellbeing, with the DofE Award helping counteract the decline in life satisfaction commonly seen as youth age.
  • Vital Skills Development: Participants—especially at the Gold level—show significant improvement in teamwork, problem-solving, initiative, resilience, and confidence, equipping them for the transition from education to employment.
  • Sense of Agency and Community: Participants feel empowered to make a positive difference in the world, supported by a robust social network beyond school and home.
  • Increased Physical Activity: Most participants meet or exceed recommended activity levels, boosting both physical and emotional health.
  • Stronger Community Ties: Participation fosters trust and belonging, helping young people navigate the transition to adulthood.

What it Means to Be “World Ready”

To be “world-ready” is not just about having the confidence to face challenges; it’s about thriving in diverse environments with empathy and adaptability.

The DofE Award nurtures cultural awareness, emotional intelligence, and the courage to embrace new experiences—qualities essential for future leaders.

In a world that increasingly values global citizenship and innovation, WildChina Education and the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award share a vision: to prepare young people to contribute meaningfully to their communities and beyond.

Success is not just personal achievement—it is creating a positive impact on others. This perspective is vital in a world where interconnectedness defines our shared future.
